National Trust Gardens

As long standing members of the National Trust, our membership has been well worth the fee. We have enjoyed our visits to houses and gardens probably in equal measure, and this as a family, as a couple, and now with our grandchildren as well. The variety found across the different properties is a delight, and has proved an inspiration to many of the ideas in our own garden. And still we have only visited about half of the properties in the country - more to tick off and enjoy for years to come.

Just three National Trust gardens

Lindisfarne garden

The Gertrude Jekyll garden at Lindisfarne

To the rear of the fairy-tale castle on a hill, converted to a home by Lutyens, lies a small square walled garden, planted to a design by Gertrude Jekyll. The garden is detached from the castle, but is only a short walk across the fields. It has an allotment feel to it. In summer it is full of colour. In winter it struggles with the harsh environment.

Acorn Bank

Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby

Acorn Bank is a short diversion off the A66 between Scotch Corner and Penrith. A walled garden houses medicinal and culinary herbs in abundance - all labelled. But there is much more, with landscaped gardens, walks through woodland by Crowundale Beck, and an old mill. The planting is in my favourite style - rambling and loose.

Goddard's garden

Goddard's Garden, York

The garden is attached to the Arts and Crafts house of Noel Terry - the chocolate manufacturer - overlooking the Knavesmire racecourse and in sight of the Terry's factory. Not a large garden, but large enough to enjoy the various "rooms". The house is the National Trust's headquarters, but was partially opened to visitors in 2012 sharing a glimpse of Terry's life.
