A peaceful haven on the side of Kinnoull Hill, overlooking Perth, developed by John and Dorothy Renton in the early 1920s after they built their Arts & Crafts-inspired house. Full of rare and unusual plants and flowers from all over the world. Thanks to the seeds collected by renowned plant hunters (including George Forrest and Frank Ludlow) and due to Dorothy’s remarkable gardening skills, the couple’s wish was granted.

Paper bark maple

A.k.a. blood-bark maple, a small to medium-sized, deciduous, oval rounded tree reaching 6–9 m, with slender upright branching, native to mixed forests in C China. The yellow flowers are androdioecious bearing only male (staminate) flowers on some plants and either bisexual or both male (staminate) and female (pistillate) flowers on other plants. , produced in small pendent corymbs in spring, the fruit being a paired samara with two winged seeds about 1cm long with a 3cm wing.

Japanese maple

A small tree of bushy habit, with bronze-crimson leaves divided into 5-7 lobes, and becoming brilliant red in autumn. Inconspicuous red-purple flowers in spring may be followed by winged, purple fruits.

Japanese maple

A small deciduous tree or medium sized shrub which forms a broad dome of lacy, dissected foliage. Flowers are small and purple, but it is the leaves that make this plant a popular ornamental: claret coloured on emerging, then purple throughout the growing season, turning all shades of orange and yellow in autumn.

Grey snake-bark maple

A.k.a. red-vein maple or Honshū maple, (Japanese: ウリハダカエデ urihadakaede, " melon-skin maple referring to the bark pattern "), a small deciduous tree growing to a height of 8–15 m, native to the mountain forests of Japan. It is dioecious male and female flowers on separate trees The flowers are produced in racemes 10 cm long, with 5 greenish-yellow sepals and petals, followed by a paired samara a winged achene, a type of fruit in which a flattened wing of fibrous, papery tissue develops from the ovary wall. 2 - 3 cm long with rounded nutlets.

Full moon maple

A bushy, medium-sized deciduous shrub or small tree, native to Japan. Grown for its spectacular foliage - bright lime green in spring, brilliant yellow - orange - red in autumn. The flowers are 1 cm diameter, with five dark purplish-red sepals, five small whitish petals (soon lost), and red stamens. They are andromonoecious male (staminate) and hermaphrodite (bisexual) flowers are on the same plant , produced 10–20 together in erect terminal corymbs a type of inflorescence in which the lower flowers have longer pedicels than the upper ones, creating a flat-topped appearance. in early spring soon after the leaves appear. The fruit is a paired samara, bright red maturing brown.

Himalayan birch

A.k.a. Himalayan birch, white-barked Himalayan birch or Indian paper birch, a fast growing, deciduous tree reaching 15 - 20 m, native to W Himalayas. It is graceful in appearance and offering light dappled shade with its open, conical crown. In spring, yellow catkins appear, closely followed by dark green ovate leaves. In autumn, the foliage turns golden yellow before falling.

Katsura treeKatsura - Japanese name for the tree (カツラ, 桂).

A.k.a. caramel tree for the burnt sugar smell it emits during leaf fall, and candyfloss tree because of the scent. This variety is smaller that c. japonicum, only reaching 10 m; only native to Japan, not China. The species is dioecious having separate male and female trees , with small inconspicuous flowers appearing early in spring that are wind pollinated. The flowers lack petals, the male being reddish and the female greenish. Female trees produce woody, pod-like fruit in clusters of 2–4, each about 1–2 cm long. The pods contain many small flattened seeds that are winged at both ends.

Smoke bush

Japanese cedar

A.k.a. Japanese redwood, a very large evergreen tree native to Japan, reaching up to 70 m with 4 m trunk diameter. It is superficially similar to the related giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), from which it can be differentiated by the longer leaves and smaller cones , and the harder bark on the trunk (thick, soft and spongy in giant sequoia).
