This page is currently under development. Although many of the trees are named here, I cannot be certain of some identifications, and particularly the variety even if I have the species correct. Uncertain names have a question mark. I have asked for some help from Fred Green, the highly experienced gardener at the model village.

Godshill: Ab-Ch Ch-Pi Pi-Wo Others: Appledurcombe Farringford Mottistone Osborne Ventnor

Godshill Model Village, located at Godshill on the Isle of Wight, features models at 1/10th scale of life on the Isle of Wight, including models of Godshill, Shanklin Chine, and other houses and churches on the island. These are complemented by over 3000 minature trees, with dwarf varieties of mainly conifers used, clipped to shape and size, using cloud pruning and coarse bonsai techniques. An RHS partner garden, a unique and fascinating place.

Acer palmatum acer - from the Latin for maple; palmatum, palm-like, referring to the 5 lobed hand shaped leaves dissectum - referring to the deeply cut leaves atropurpurpeum - very dark purple.

Japanese maple

A small deciduous tree or medium sized shrub which forms a broad dome of lacy, dissected foliage. Flowers are small and purple, the leaves are claret coloured on emerging, then purple throughout the growing season, turning all shades of orange and yellow in autumn.

Callistemon rigiduskallos - from Greek meaning beauty and stemon, stamen, referring to the plant's showy stamens; rigidus is Latin for rigid, describing the stiff, erect branches and narrow, straight leaves.

Stiff Bottlebrush

A medium-sized, upright, evergreen tropical shrub that will grow to 5 m in its native habitat, native to Australia. Flowers feature numerous bushy bright red stamens that encircle the stem in cylindrical spikes resembling bottlebrushes. Flowers bloom intermittently throughout the year.

Cedrus deodara cedrus - from Greek kedros, cedar; deodara - from Sanskrit devadaru, a compound of deva (god) and daru (wood or tree).

Deodar cedar

A large evergreen coniferous tree reaching 40 - 50 m, with a trunk up to 3 m in diameter. It has a conic crown with level branches and drooping branchlets. The female cones are barrel-shaped, and disintegrate when mature (in 12 months) to release the winged seeds. The male cones are 4 - 6 cm long, and shed their pollen in autumn.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Stewartii Chamaecyparis - from Greek chamai meaning dwarf, and kuparissos, meaning cypress; lawsoniana - after Charles Lawson (1794�1873), head of the nursery in Edinburgh, Scotland; Stewartii - after Samuel Stewart of Edinburgh, who first recorded and cultivated this striking yellow sport in the late 19th century.

Lawson's Cypress Stewartii

A slow-growing, narrowly conical evergreen conifer. It has golden-yellow, flattened, scale-likefoliage. The new growth is bright golden, keeping its colour exceptionally well. It has a narrow, conical shape with slightly drooping or pendant branch tips.
