Named after places

Latinised names for a genus or species occasionally refer to places around the world.

  • Amurense - native to the Amur region of Manchuria. e.g. Phellodendron amurense
  • Andina - of the Andes. e.g. prumnopitys andina, the Chilean plum yew
  • Beuvronensis a after Beuvron in France. e.g. Pinus sylvestris beuvronensis, Dwarf Scots pine.
  • Cappadocicum - after Cappadocia in Turkey. e.g. Acer cappadocicum
  • Castanea comes from Castonis, a Town in Thessaly in Greece where the tree was grown for its chestnuts
  • Dodong - from the port of Dodong on the Korean island of Ullong Do.
  • Edo - after Edo, or Yedo, the old name for Tokyo. e.g. Prunus serrulata Edo Zakuri
  • Escarena - refers to the Escarena Forest in the Alpes-Maritimes region of France. e.g. pinus pinaster spp. escarena

  • Inaba - a former province in the north of Honshu, Japan. e.g. Acer palmatum inaba shidare, a Japanese male cultivar.
  • Jezoensis after Yezo or Jezo, the former name for Hokkaido in Japan. As in picea jezoensis

  • Valonia - from the Venetian name for an Albanian town now known as Vlore. e.g. Valonia oak
  • Wollemia - from Wollemi National Park in New South Wales. e.g. Wollemia nobilis, the Wollemi pine.
