Trees and shrubs gallery - Burton Agnes

Burton Agnes Hall,an Elizabethan hall in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a large walled garden which has many thousands of plant species, herbaceous borders, a jungle garden and collection of campanulas, a yew maze and giant games such as chess, noughts and crosses and snakes and ladders. The woodland is planted as an arboretum walk with stands of old lime, beech and oak.

Shrimp leaved sycamore

A popular cultivar of the common sycamore, grown for its modest size (to 4m in 20 years), and its salmon pink spring leaves. It displays greenish yellow flowers in spring and winged red fruit in the autumn.

Actinidia chinensis - from Greek aktis, meaning ray or star, referring to the radiating styles of the plant's flowers; and Latin chinensis, from China.

Kiwi fruit

A fruiting vine native to China. It is one of some 40 related species of the genus actinidia, and the origin of most commercial varieties of kiwifruit. Fruit colour may vary from green through brown to gold, depending on cultivar. This is the female of the species - the plant is dioecious having male and female reproductive parts on separate plants. .

Tree of Heaven

A fast-growing, deciduous tree native to China, now an aggressive, invasive species across North America and Europe, often damaging foundations and outcompeting native vegetation. The trees can rapidly reach heights of 17 to 27 m. They are dioecious having male and female trees separate and produce papery, twisted, winged seeds (samaras) that turn reddish-brown in the autumn. They also spread aggressively by producing vigorous underground root suckers. It produces ailanthone, a chemical compound found in the bark that has allelopathic it can inhibit the growth of surrounding plants properties.

Araucaria araucana araucaria - after a region of Chile; araucana - the native tribe who used the tree's seeds for food.

Monkey puzzle

A.k.a. monkey tail tree, pewen, pehuen pine or piñonero, an evergreen tree growing to 30 - 40 m, native to C and S Chile and W Argentina. It is on the IUCN list as endangered in its native region due to logging, forest fires, and grazing. It is usually dioecious male and female cones on separate trees . The male (pollen) cones are oblong and cucumber-shaped. It is wind pollinated. The bark can be up to 15 cm thick, possibly an adaptation to resist wildfires.

Cedrus atlantica cedrus - from Greek kedros, cedar; atlantica - from Latin, 'from the Atlas Mountains'; glauca, blue. glauca

Atlas cedar

A large coniferous evergreen tree, 30 to 35 m, with a trunk diameter of 1.5 to 2 m. A native of the Rif and Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria. It is very similar to the other true cedars; some authorities consider it a subspecies of c. libani; others rank it as a distinct species. This glaucous variety has a blue tinge to the needles.

Cornus kousa cornus - from Latin cornu, meaning horn, referring to the tree's wood, which is dense and hard (like horn); kousa - from kōsa, the traditional Japanese name for the tree; chinensis - from China. chinensis

Chinese dogwood

A small bushy tree which produces a profusion of large white flower bracts modified leaves often appearing below a flower or inflorescence, that slowly adopt pinkish hues as they mature. It flowers in May and June, weeks after the leaves appear. This variety will grow to around 3m in height and spread, unlike the species which can reach 12 m. Native to E Asia.

Corylus Corylus - from Greek korylos meaning helmet, referring to the leafy, protective husk (the involucre) that wraps tightly around the nut; maxima - from maximus, meaning greatest, as the filbert is more robust than the common hazel; Purpurea - from Latin purpureus, which means purple, referring to the leaves. maxima purpurea

Purple leaved filbert

The species is a large deciduous shrub growing to 6m, not known in the wild, but cultivated for its long-husked edible nuts. It has pendulous red catkins on leafless twigs in late winter. C. purpurea has dark red leaves and red husks, though it does not bear nuts abundantly. This specimen could possibly be c. avellana Red Majestic, I am unsure which.

Corynabutilon Coryn - from Greek koryne, meaning club, referring to the flattened, club-shaped branches; abutilon - from Arabic abutilun, the name given to the mallow plant by Persian physician Avicenna; vitifolium - from Latin vitis, meaning vine, and folium, meaning leaf. vitifolium

Chilean tree mallow

A.k.a. Abutilon vitifolium and vine-leaved Abutilon, a fast-growing, large deciduous shrub with masses of large, open, saucer-shaped flowers that resemble mallows. It flowers from late spring to mid-summer. The classic species features pale to deep mauve, lilac, or blue-purple flowers, but there is also a white variety (var. album) and cultivars such as Tennant’s White produce pure white flowers offset by prominent yellow stamens.

Indian bean tree

A.k.a. southern catalpa, cigartree. A deciduous tree growing to 12 m, with brown to grey bark, maturing into hard plates or ridges. The short thick trunk supports long, straggling branches which form a broad and irregular head. The fruit resembles bean pods, long and thin, with numerous flat light brown seeds with two papery wings. This specimen is the golden form of the species.

Smoke bush

The species is a.k.a. Rhus cotinus, European smoketree, Eurasian smoketree, smoke tree, Venetian sumach, or dyer's sumach. It is a multiple-branching deciduous shrub growing to 5 - 7 m with an open, spreading, irregular habit, only rarely forming a small tree. Royal purple is a popular cultivar developed for its deep purple leaves. Large feathery, pink inflorescences in summer. Most of the flowers in each inflorescence abort, elongating into yellowish-pink to pinkish-purple feathery plumes (when viewed en masse these have a wispy 'smoke-like' appearance, hence the common name). This could possibly be c. coggygria purpurea.]

A compact deciduous shrub reaching 1.5 m, with masses of fragrant, star-shaped blush-to-rose-pink flowers. Dense, rounded clusters of star-like, purplish-pink flowers are often tinged with white and feature yellow stamens. The blooms emit a mild, sweet perfume.

A compact, hardy deciduous shrub with abundant clusters of fluffy, double pink flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Leaves are deciduous, with elongated, serrated green leaves that can take on yellow or red tints in autumn. The species is native to C and E Asia, but most plants seen are cultivars. It will grow to a mature height and spread of about 1 m to 1.5 m.

A vigorous, bushy evergreen shrub with small, glossy, dark green leaves. In summer and early autumn it produces clusters of tubular, carmine-red buds that open into shell-pink flowers. The plant is believed to be a cross between E. rubra (or its variety macrantha) and E. virgata

Japanese aralia

A hardy, broadleaf evergreen shrub native to Japan and South Korea, with massive, glossy, leathery leaves (up to 40 cm across) with 7 to 9 deep lobes. In late autumn to early winter, it produces large, spherical clusters (umbels) of creamy-white flowers, followed by small, round, inedible fruits that ripen to black in spring.

American witch hazel

A deciduous shrub or small tree native to North America, growing 3 to 6 m tall. It has fragrant, ribbon-like yellow flowers that uniquely amongst its genus, bloom from mid-to-late autumn while the leaves are falling. The pale-to-bright yellow flowers have four spidery, crimped petals and emit a faint, spicy perfume. Fruit is a woody, two-part capsule that takes a year to mature and explosively flings shiny, black seeds up to 10 m away. The leaves and bark are widely extracted for their astringent, anti-inflammatory medicinal properties.
