Cedrus atlantica cedrus - from Greek kedros, cedar; atlantica - from Latin, 'from the Atlas Mountains'

Atlas Blue Cedar

A native of the Atlas mountains in Morocco. A large, evergreen tree, conical when young, as here, broadening with age with horizontally-spreading branches and downy young shoots. Narrow, needle-like leaves to 3.5cm long are a dull green to grey-green colour.

Barrel-shaped, erect cones ripen to brown and mature over two years, breaking up whilst still on the tree. This one is planted on the East side of the small lake, on the Cascade Walk. The gallery on the middle image shows male "stroboli" (3), and a female cone (4) - though this is not actually from this tree.

Cedrus libani - cedrus - from Greek kedros, cedar; libani - from Lebanon.

Cedar of Lebanon

This is a young version of what will become a majestic, large tree (have a look at three large versions at Constable Burton). One of three "true" cedars, the others being the Atlas and the deodar. Calocedrus decurrent, thuja plicata, and cryptomaria japonica are called incense cedar, western red cedar and Japanese red cedar because of their scent, but they are different species.

Cercidiphyllum cercidiphyllum: Greek Cercis - redbud and phyllon - leaf, referring to the leaf shape's resemblance to the redbud genus cercis; japonicum - of Japan; japonicum

Katsura tree Katsura - Japanese name for the tree (???, ?).

A.k.a. caramel tree for the light caramel smell it emits during leaf fall, and candyfloss tree because of the scent. A deciduous tree growing 10 - 45 m tall, a native of Japan and E China. The flowers are inconspicuous, produced in early spring among the opening leaves, with male and female flowers on separate plants (dioecious). The fruit is a cluster of two to four follicles a dry, dehiscent fruit derived from a single carpel that splits open along one side (a single suture) to release its seeds. , each containing several winged seeds.

Cercis canadensis - Cercis: from Ancient Greek kerkis meaning weaver's shuttle, referring to the shape of the seed pods; canadensis - native to Canada and the eastern United States.

Eastern redbud - refers to the vibrant magenta-pink flowers that bloom on bare branches in early spring

A.k.a. spicewood or wild olive. It typically grows to 6-9 m with an 8-10 m spread. The bark is dark in colour, smooth, later scaly with ridges somewhat apparent, sometimes with maroon patches. The winter buds are tiny, rounded and dark red to chestnut in colour. The flowers are showy, light to dark magenta pink in colour, appearing in clusters from spring to early summer, on bare stems before the leaves, sometimes on the trunk itself. The fruits are flattened, dry, brown, pea-like pods which contain flat, elliptical, brown seeds, maturing in August to October.

Japanese summersweet

A.k.a. Japanese clethra, a large deciduous shrub or small upright tree, growing to 5m. It produces long, horizontal, or drooping finger-like racemes of small, white, fragrant flowers which bloom from mid to late summer. Leaves are deciduous, dark green, and glossy, with distinct serrated (toothed) margins. They often cluster at the ends of shoots. In autumn, the foliage turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange, or deep red. Mature plant have exfoliating bark that peels in patches to reveal shades of grey and cinnamon brown.

Colutea arborescens kolutea: the Greek name for the shrub; arborescens Latin meaning tree-like or becoming a tree, referring to the shrub's bushy growth that can reach heights of 2 to 5 m.

Bladder senna

A vigorous, deciduous shrub native to the Mediterranean, growing up to 3 m. It is characterized by pale green, pinnate leaves, yellow pea-like flowers blooming from spring to summer, and distinctive inflated, papery seed pods that turn translucent as they ripen.

Kousa dogwood possibly from dagwood - dags being sharp skewers, which the dogwood could furnish (cf. dagger)

A.k.a. Chinese dogwood, Korean dogwood, or Japanese dogwood. A small deciduous tree growing 8 - 12 m, native to E Asia including Korea, China and Japan. Like other Cornus, C. kousa has opposite, simple leaves, 4 - 10 cm long. The fruit is a globose red compound berry 2 - 3 cm in diameter. It is edible, with a sweet and creamy flavour, and is sometimes used for making wine.

Corylopsis pauciflora Corylopsis - from Greek Korylos: Refers to the Hazelnut genus, Corylus, Opsis: appearance. meaning resembling hazel, because the leaves look like those of the hazelnut tree; sinensis Latin - with few flowers - referring to the low number of flowers per inflorescence compared to other Corylopsis, not to the total number of flowers per plant.

Chinese winter hazel

A.k.a. buttercup witch hazel, a species of flowering plant in the family Hamamelidaceae, native to Taiwan and Japan. It is a deciduous, spreading shrub growing to 1.5 m tall by 2.5 m wide. It produces masses of pale yellow flowers in pendant racemes a flower cluster with the separate flowers attached by short equal stalks at equal distances along a central stem. The flowers at the base of the central stem develop first. in early spring, followed by leaves opening bronze and turning to rich green.[Wikipedia]

Crataegus laevigata from Greek krátos, meaning strength, referring to the tree's hard wood; laevigata is Latin and means smooth or slippery surface, which describes the leaves.

Midland hawthorn

A.k.a. English hawthorn, woodland hawthorn, or mayflower, a native of W and C Europe. It is a large shrub or small tree growing to 8 m, with a dense crown. The hermaphrodite flowers are produced in May, in corymbs a type of inflorescence in which the lower flowers have longer pedicels than the upper ones, creating a flat-topped appearance. of 6 to 12, each flower with five white or pale pink petals and two or sometimes three styles, each of which produces a seed (unlike c. monogyna which has 1). The fruit is a dark red pome, slightly broader than long.

Girald's acanthopanax

A medium-sized, deciduous shrub with a thick covering of whitish spines on new shoots. It is used in Chinese medicine, to dispel dampness and strengthen joints, and also is an ingredient in tea products.

Spindle tree

A deciduous shrub or small tree growing up to 3 - 9 m high. Native to Europe and Western Asia, it is best known for its striking autumn foliage, which turns brilliant shades of red, pink, or yellow-green. In spring, it produces inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers that attract pollinators. The most distinctive feature is its autumn fruit: bright pink, four-lobed capsules that split open to reveal vibrant orange seeds. This specimen is possibly the cultivar Red Cascade.
