Prunus serrulata Yedo Zakuri

Japanese cherry

A.k.a. Edo Zakuri, it forms part of the Sato Zakuri ("village flowers") group of Japanese garden cultivars. It is named after Edo or Yedo - the old name for Tokyo. A medium-sized tree with broad flattened crown, growing 5 to 6 m high. It has semi-double flowers which appear in late-April to early-May, with about 15 petals arranged in 3 tiers, the outer tier pink and the inners white. The flowers are in clusters of up to 5-6 flowers and over 4 cm dia. Leaves are broadly oblong or obovate, golden brown when unfolding. It It colours well in autumn to copper-bronze. Prunus x yedoensis

Yoshino cherry

A.k.a. Cerasus × yedoensis, this is a Japanese hybrid between Prunus speciosa (Oshima cherry) and Prunus pendula f. ascendens. A small, deciduous tree growing to 12m. Leaves are alternately arranged, with a serrated margin; they are often bronze-toned when newly emerged, becoming dark green by summer. Flowers emerge before the leaves in early spring, with five white or pale pink petals, growing in clusters of five or six. Pterocarya fraxinifolia

Caucasian wingnut

A.k.a. Caucasian walnut. A large broadly spreading deciduous tree to 35m, it has deeply fissured, grey-black bark, with large pinnate leaves and small green flowers in drooping racemes a flower cluster with the separate flowers attached by short equal stalks at equal distances along a central stem. Pterocarya macroptera

Large winged wingnut

A native of China, where it grows in forests in valleys, along mountain streams, and up slopes. It is on the IUCN Red list International Union for Conservation of Nature - red is vulnerable. Pyrus korschinskyi

Kazak pear

A.k.a. wild pear, bhukaran pear. A native of C Asia, where it is on the IUCN International Union for Conservation of Nature. Red list as critically endangered. A medium sized to tree growing to 15m . Masses of white flowers are followed by pomes a fruit consisting of a fleshy enlarged receptacle and a tough central core containing the seeds, e.g. an apple, pear, quince, rowan , solitary or in pairs, which are yellowish green, pyriform pear-shaped . Quercus alnifolia

Golden oak

An evergreen oak species native to Cyprus, growing on the igneous geological complex of the Troodos Mountains. The flowers are unisexual; the male catkins are greenish-yellow forming spreading or pendulous clusters at the tips of the branches; the female flowers are axillary, solitary or in groups of 2 or 3. Quercus bicolor

Swamp white oak

A native of C and NE North America. It grows to 25m, and can live for up to 300 years. Generally, the color is not as reliable or as brilliant as the white oak can be. Quercus chrysolepis

Canyon live oak

A.k.a. Californian Live Oak, Golden-Cup Oak, Maul Oak, Canyon Oak Native to SW USA, NW Mexico. An evergreen tree with large, spreading, horizontal branches, and a broad, rounded crown, growing to 30 m. Acorns occur solitarily or in pairs, turban-like with a shallow, thick cup of scales densely covered with yellowish hairs; the stalk is barely evident. The trunk bark is grey and rough. Quercus coccinea

Scarlet oak

Native to E North Amercia and Canada, a large deciduous tree, growing to to 24m in height, with large leaves up to 15cm long, deeply lobed withwith 7 or 9 deep lobes, coarsely toothed at the apex. Leaves are dark green above, paler beneath, both sides shiny, becoming scarlet in autumn. Flowers are yellow-green catkins in spring. Quercus dentata

Japanese emperor oak

A.k.a. daimyo oak, a native of China, Japan and Korea. A deciduous round-headed tree growing to 20m high. It can have an ungainly, unpicturesque habit when old, thin and gaunt, usually shrot lived in the UK. The undersurface of its exceptionally large leaves sometimes presents an extraordinary appearance because of an infestation of disk-like galls, so thickly placed as to overlap each other. Quercus ellipsoidalis

Northern pin oak

A.k.a. Hill's oak or jack oak. A medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 20m with an open, rounded crown. The acorns tend to be ellipsoid, a third to a half covered in a deep cup, green maturing pale brown about 18 months after pollination. There are 21 photos on the RBGE Garden explorer website.
